Nick León is your average 23-year-old. The Fort Lauderdale native enjoys exploring nature trails and feasting through the city’s diverse culinary scene.
When not adventuring though, León is making beats for himself and others. He’s played at III Points Music, Art & Technology Festival for the last two years and will return again this October.
But first, León is playing Red Bull Sound Select Presents: 3 Days in Miami, which runs September 1 through 3 at the Hangar in downtown Miami.
The three-day music series showcases established and emerging artists on one stage. The “3 Days In” event is the first of its kind for Red Bull Sound Select. In the past, they’ve hosted a similar series called “30 Days in LA” in Los Angeles.
The event calls on local cultural curators like III Points, Poplife and YesJulz to help select the artists to showcase, which is how León got involved.
“The good man, David Sinopoli from III Points, pitched my stuff to them when they were looking for curators and they said ‘Yeah,'” León explains from Red Bull Sound Select’s pre-party at East, Miami on Thursday. “It was just as much a surprise to me!”
As the party kicked off at East, Miami, guests mingled to León’s mellow vibes while Vanity Projects gave mini manicures. Red Bull cocktails never stopped flowing.
From there, the crowd moved to The Hangar for a night of music curated by Miami’s self-proclaimed “director of vibes,” YesJulz. New Jersey rappers 070 Shake heated the stage up before Toronto rapper Jazz Cartier. The crowd was filled with people in oversized bomber jackets, dad hats and Adidas bouncing up and down. They danced and rapped along as A$AP Ferg hit the stage, performing hits like “Work” and “New Level” while throwing water on them.
Tonight is Nick León‘s turn to let the crowd get loose. III Points arranged the artists on tonight’s bill, so León will play before Canadian electronic duo Tennyson and Norwegian music producer Cashmere Cat.
“I’m going to do a live set, playing my own music,” León says. “[It’s going to be] something different. I wanted to see if I can get away with just doing my own thing… playing my own music the way I want to play it and see if it works out. I think, with who I’m billed with, it works.”
The final day of Red Bull Sound Select Presents: 3 Days in Miami is curated by Miami’s Poplife, and will feature San Antonio’s Xavier Omär with some soulful jazz, Miami-based R&B artist Steven A. Clark and English electronic-R&B duo AlunaGeorge. Both nights will have treats from local vendors like F27’s nitrogen ice cream, The Salty Donut’s doughnuts, and Don Gloton’s Venezuelan arepas.
Red Bull Sound Select Presents: 3 Days in Miami will start 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, September 2-3, at the Hangar, 60 NE 11th St., in Miami. A limited number of tickets are still available at the door. Call 305-702-3257 or go to Hangar305.com.
